JAMES BLAKE - OVERGROWN

James Blakes album Overgrown is an expression of a deep wish to be more than just something which is a temporary occurrence, in his words "not just a star or a stone on the shore". The album themes include abject loneliness, heartbreak, confusion, anxiety and apprehension. The design concept was to create a cover which referenced these themes along with the idea of impermanence and the value in meaning. The creation of each paper flower is to symbolise the beginning of something which will grow then eventually perish, returning back to carbon matter. Many strings of the flowers were then strung out creating multiple layers. These layers represent the depth and introspective nature of the music along with referencing the overall idea of "Overgrown".

The process to create this was as important as the final art. The concept had to first grow from small intricacies and detailed attention just as Blake does with the swirling and building of the music from beginning to end, thus creating an emotionally complex and almost twisted musical journey.
